Xavi to support Victor Font in Barcelona’s president elections

Barcelona will hold presidential elections later this year and former manager and club legend Xavi appears to be in favor of Joan Laporta’s rival Victor Font.

Diario AS report that Xavi was at the launch of the cross-party project led by Víctor Font on Monday, in a move which has set tongues wagging in the city.

Xavi had a painful end to his time in charge of Barca under Laporta. The boss initially announced his departure in the January, was convinced to stay on by Laporta and was then sacked anyway.

Laporta has spoken about the elections recently amid speculation they could be held at the end of March.

“I’m not thinking about the elections right now. The season has just started and we’re in the thick of it. We’ll call them when it’s best for Barca, and especially for the team,” he told Catalunya Radio.

“They have to be called between the 15th of March and 15th of May, which wouuld be before a possible Champions League semi-final, but we haven’t decided yet.”

Font has regularly criticised Laporta during his second stint as president and even called on him to step aside last year due to his concerns over the club’s financial situation.
