Barcelona boss Hansi Flick saw his team draw 3-3 with Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday night and shared his verdict on the match afterwards.
The draw put the team’s defence in the spotlight once again, as Club Brugge cut the visitors apart on the counter, but Flick doesn’t sound like he wants to change things too much.
“We can change some things, but we also have to stick to our philosophy. We don’t have to change our style of play; we are Barça,” he said.
“This isn’t about the philosophy. We can do things better. When there’s no intensity, we don’t have chances. Teams in the Champions League make very quick transitions, and Club Brugge did that very well, and we respect that. A 3-3 draw isn’t a good result, but we came from behind.”
“Everyone has to play in their correct position and press. We did it well [in a 3-1 home win over Elche] on Sunday. Today we managed it in some situations but not in others. We shouldn’t make excuses because it was the same starting 11. It’s not the team’s best moment. We can play at another level.”
Flick also shared where he thought his team had struggled in Belgium.
“It wasn’t an easy match. We created chances, but they defended well and were aggressive. We didn’t press the ball and lost many duels, especially in midfield,” he added.
“It’s not easy for the back line to defend like that. We have to work on it and analyse everything. It’s about having more intensity when we don’t have the ball.
“We have to be alert when [teams] create chances with one or two touches. We have to defend not only in the back line but also in midfield. We need to improve in this area.”
