‘If they want to sell him, he has to play’ – Barcelona sent strong message on Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona remains unclear amid speculation he could leave in January in a bid to boost his World Cup chances.

Hansi Flick has made it clear that Joan Garcia is his No. 1, while Ter Stegen has been warned he needs to play regularly if he wants to be Germany’s first choice at World Cup 2026.

There has been rumored interest from Turkish clubs in Ter Stegen’s services but the goalkeeper is “not convinced” by the offers received so far, according to La Vanguardia.

The report adds that Ter Stegen is currently thinking of staying and seeing out his contact, that runs until 2028, as he refuses to be pressured into an exit.

“If they want to sell him, he has to play; that way he’ll have more market value,” is apparently the message from those close to Ter Stegen about his current situation.

Yet it will be very hard for Ter Stegen to see any game time between now and the end of the season if Garcia remains fit. The Copa del Rey does represent a chance for Ter Stegen to play, although Hansi Flick has said he’s not chosen his keeper yet and could still go with Wojciech Szczęsny.

Barcelona are set to take on Guadalajara in the competition on Tuesday, and it will certainly be interesting to see who Flick chooses as his starting keeper for the match.
