Wojciech Szczęsny’s brother has said the Barcelona goalkeeper would prefer to be on the bench for Hansi Flick’s side than a regular in the team.
The stopper came out of retirement and became first choice last season. He started the current campaign as back-up to Joan Garcia but has been thrown back into the team due to the goalkeeper’s injury.
Now Jan Szczęsny has explained why he thinks his brother would be happier being on the bench.
“I know Wojtek would rather watch his teammates from the bench and, if necessary, help out. I still see a spark in him after every good save in a match, and I’m happy about that because I enjoy watching him play,” he told WP Sportowe Fakty.
“He’s already seen his share of life, played in the most important matches, so it’s time for the youngsters. Especially since Garcia is a very capable goalkeeper. Wojtek is always ready, but I think he’d rather be an observer than a participant.”
Barcelona’s backline is in the spotlight after a run of nine games without a clean sheet, and Jan Szczęsny thinks teams have figured out Hansi Flick’s side.
“The world is slowly adapting to Barcelona’s style of play, which is to defend high up from their own goal. Opponents are starting to get the hang of it; they’re no longer surprised by it,” he aded
“When you play high up the pitch, you’re vulnerable to counterattacks. They’re bound to happen, regardless of whether you’re facing Real Madrid or Bruges. Barcelona’s style moves everyone. They don’t play for a 1-0 lead, they play for a 7-0. And if they concede five goals, that’s too bad. I like that.”
Szczesny will be back between the sticks on Sunday but may then return to the bench, as Garcia is expected to return to action after the international break.
