Barcelona asked Robert Lewandowski to ‘stop scoring’ during his first season at Camp Nou

Robert Lewandowski has been scoring goals for fun since joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich back in 2022.

The striker netted 23 times during his first campaign at the club and helped Barcelona win the title under Xavi Hernandez. However, it’s now claimed that Barca actually asked him to stop scoring at the end of the campaign to avoid paying an extra bonus to Bayern.

Sebastian Staszewski has written a new book on Lewandowski and says that with the title already secured, a Barca board member told the striker: “Robert, we need you to stop scoring goals in the last two matches.”

The reason being that if Lewandowski hit 25 goals during the campaign, Barcelona would have had to pay Bayern a €2.5 million bonus.

As it happens, Lewandowski didn’t score any more goals but still ended up with the Pichichi award for the league’s top scorer, beating nearest rival Karim Benzema to the trophy.
