Frenkie de Jong has been full of praise for Robert Lewandowski as he prepares to face his Barcelona team-mate in World Cup qualifying.
The Netherlands take on Poland on Friday night in a game which will see the two players come up against each other.
Lewandowski heads into the match fresh from bagging a hat-trick for Barcelona against Celta, and with De Jong revealing just how important he feels the veteran still is to the team.
“With Lewandowski back, our team is definitely better; the difference he makes is enormous, everyone knows that. Robert has proven it for almost 15 or 20 years, always scoring goals; he’s a world-class striker,” he said via Mundo Deportivo.
De Jong also spoke about his future at the club after penning a new contract. The midfielder says he has received offers but was never tempted to move on.
“Do I have to go to the Premier League to prove my worth?… I don’t think so. There were offers, but I’m happy at Barça,” he added.
“The Premier League is the best league right now, without a doubt, just like La Liga was about ten years ago. But that doesn’t mean you have to play there to prove you’re a great player. I already had that dream as a child with Barcelona.”
The midfielder will face Poland and Lithuania over the international break and will then return to Barcelona. He’ll have to sit out the game against Athletic Club due to suspension and admits he’s “annoyed” at being forced to miss the match.
